Dress Celebrates the Threads that Run Through, Connect Lindsey Wilson University Alumni

Family heirloom worn by Norma Jean Downey Blair '68 in Lindsey Wilson Homecoming parade connects local culture, community and heritage.

COLUMBIA, Ky. (11/03/2026) — When a reception is held for the Lindsey Wilson University Alumni Art Show on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Lucretia C. Begley Art Gallery, it will also celebrate a nearly 60-year-old dress that is full of regional history and heritage.

A patriotic red-white-and-blue dress created by Adair County resident the late Doris Kessler Downey for her daughter, Norma Jean Downey Blair '68, is on exhibit in a display case in the W.W. Slider Humanities Center lobby, just outside of the Begley Art Gallery.

The Nov. 5 art reception, which will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. CT, is part of Lindsey Wilson's 2026 Homecoming activities. And the dress worn by Blair is connected to a previous Homecoming weekend. She represented the Student National Educators Association in the 1967 Lindsey Wilson Homecoming parade, which had the winning float.

The dress was spotted last year on Facebook by Valerie Adams '90 of Columbia after a picture of the family heirloom had been posted by Sommer Blair Brown, Blair's daughter, during Lindsey Wilson's 2025 Homecoming weekend.

"When I saw it, it evoked strong feelings and caused me to reflect on the legacy of Lindsey Wilson over this past year," said Adams, who is incoming president of the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association. "As a fellow Lindsey Wilson alumna and Adair Countian, I felt like I was a part of the story the dress represents."

'More than a garment'

As Adams noted, the nearly six-decade-old dress is "more than a garment" -- it's a piece of clothing that symbolizes the themes of education, family, legacy and tradition. The red, white and blue fabrics used to create the dress also made it a perfect complement to the America 250 celebration.

Adams shared her thoughts with Lindsey Wilson art professor Kristyne Gilbert, who is also curator of the Begley Art Gallery. Gilbert then arranged the dress in the Slider Humanities Center display case, accompanied by several other Lindsey Wilson artifacts, including a letterman jacket worn by the late Larry Nash '70.

"Kristyne so creatively designed and captured the display around the many themes the Alumni Council wished to convey," said Adams.

Blair was also a student in the former Lindsey Wilson Training School, where the legendary Helen Flatt was a supervising teacher, popularly known at the time as a critic teacher. Blair was named 1968 Miss Lindsey Wilson, married fellow Blue Raider Sammy Blair '69 and enjoyed a 32-year career in Adair County public schools. Her granddaughter Millie Jean Brown '29, is currently an LWU education major.

Like Blair, Lindsey Wilson runs through the Adams family. Adams' husband, Dean '78, is an alumnus, and their daughter, Devon Adams Jett, is a 2002 graduate. Their granddaughter Lilly Adams '29 is currently enrolled at Lindsey Wilson.

"Much like the intricate stitches lovingly placed by Norma Jean's mother, the legacy of Lindsey Wilson has been carefully woven over generations by students, families, faculty, alumni and friends," said Adams. "It is a legacy worth remembering, celebrating and passing on. After all, our greatest legacy is not simply what we leave behind, but what we inspire future generations to carry forward."
