COLUMBIA, Ky. (04/08/2025) — One of Lindsey Wilson College's more popular undergraduate majors is now available online.

Beginning with the 2025-26 school year, the Lindsey Wilson bachelor of arts degree in communication will be part of the college's online undergraduate degree offerings.

With an emphasis in organizational communication, the online communication program features eight-week courses. Qualified students can earn up to 30 hours of prior learning credit, as well as receive financial aid.

Students who transfer into the program with a general education certificate, such as an associate in arts or science from a community college, can complete the Lindsey Wilson degree in as little as 18 months.

"There has been a great deal of interest in offering this program online because it is not only one of Lindsey Wilson's popular majors, but it is also a very strong program that opens up a multitude of professional opportunities for our graduates," said Tommie Ann Saragas, Lindsey Wilson assistant vice president of educational outreach for online and graduate programs.

The communication degree can lead to a wide range of career opportunities, including work in advertising and marketing, human resources, media relations, labor relations and other administrative work.

Because Lindsey Wilson has block transfer agreements with the Kentucky Community & Technical College System and several other states' community colleges, Saragas said that the communication program affords a clear pathway for transfer students to earn a bachelor's degree.

"We value the strong relationship we have built with community colleges over the years, and the addition of this program is yet another example of listening to what we have been told from our community college partners," she said. "It's so great that students will have another way to be a Blue Raider."

'Same High-Quality Education'

Students in Lindsey Wilson's online programs have full access to the college's student services, career services and other programs. And all of the online communication classes will be taught by Lindsey Wilson faculty members.

"That's one of the strongest aspects about this new online program -- students will be taught by Lindsey Wilson faculty," said Lindsey Wilson Dean of the School of Business and Communication Benson Sexton. "Our online communication students will receive the same high-quality education that our students get on the main campus, and our communication faculty are well-prepared to offer their robust, challenging and rewarding classes online."

Online students are assigned a success coach "from their first hour in the program all the way through graduation," said Saragas.

"Our success coaches are more than academic advisers," said Saragas. "They also work with students on strengthening their time-management techniques as well as expanding their soft skills so when they graduate they are prepared to hit the ground running."

Relationships are central to Lindsey Wilson's communication program, and that will also be true in the online format, according to Jenifer Furkin, communication professor and program coordinator.

"Collaborative work is a big part of our program because as a professional, you are going to constantly collaborate and work with other professionals," said Furkin. "So collaborative work that builds strong relationships between students and students and professors will be a major characteristic of this online program."
