by Duane Bonifer

COLUMBIA, Ky. (05/08/2025) — Lindsey Wilson College is offering area youth a perfect way to kick off the summer months, and at a price that can't be beat.

Lindsey Wilson College's IMAGINE! Youth Theatre -- a free summer youth program -- will be offered this year from June 2-29.

Open to area youth from ages 8-18 and part of Lindsey Wilson's TheatreFest! Program, IMAGINE! Youth Theatre teaches participants about acting, stage makeup, and prop and set design and construction. It meets from 8 a.m.-noon CT Monday-Friday at the college.

This year's IMAGINE! Youth Theatre will culminate with a production of Monica Flory's adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic collection of stories The Jungle Book. It will be presented by IMAGINE! Youth Theatre participants June 27-29 in the college's V.P. Henry Auditorium.

IMAGINE! Students will be taught by theatre apprentices in the TheatreFest! Program, along with production director Kassidy Phelps and theatre professor Robert Brock.

"IMAGINE! is always so popular with area families because it's a fun way for young people to be exposed to theater, and students also pick up several other skills while participating," said Phelps. "In addition to making new friends, they learn a lot about improvisation because of the improv games we play. They also learn valuable team-building skills as well."

Lindsey Wilson's TheatreFest! Program has offered IMAGINE! Youth Theatre for more than a decade because "it is such a good way to expose young people to the arts," said Brock.

"Even kids who don't initially have a strong interest in theater when they start in IMAGINE! benefit a lot from participating because it helps them come out of their shell and learn new things," said Brock. "It's great to see young people grow and develop throughout their month in the program. And of course it's wonderful to see the smiles on their faces when they take a bow after helping present the big production at the end of the month."
